Financial crime work can span policy, people, data and systems. A useful starting point is the decision or concern behind the enquiry: a control that is difficult to evidence, oversight that needs clearer information, monitoring that does not give teams confidence, or a technology change whose risks and responsibilities need examination.
An initial conversation identifies the organisation and jurisdictions involved, the question to resolve, available evidence, decision-makers and constraints. This context determines whether advisory work is suitable and what records or people should inform it. Any written or workshop output is agreed before work begins.
Controls, governance and risk
For questions about an AML framework, the discussion can examine how risk assessment informs policies and controls, who owns key decisions, how exceptions are escalated, and whether management information supports meaningful oversight. Related questions may concern control gaps, remediation priorities or MLRO governance. The relevant national rules and supervisory expectations depend on the firm and jurisdiction; international standards are implemented through country-specific measures.
An MLRO or compliance leader may instead want to explore role boundaries, reporting routes, decision records and the information available to senior management. Any advice is around the organisation's circumstances and does not appoint Trevor as an MLRO or substitute for accountable internal decision-making.
AML, customer due diligence and sanctions
AML consulting can begin with a specific operating question or a broader view of how controls fit together. Customer due diligence and enhanced due diligence questions include evidence standards, review triggers and escalation, including how beneficial ownership information is assessed alongside other sources. Sanctions screening advice can examine control ownership, alert handling and oversight in the context of the firm's risk approach.
Advisory work can help clarify due diligence evidence, escalation and control ownership. Customer acceptance, suspicious activity reporting and regulatory decisions remain with the organisation. The applicable rules and available evidence determine the advice that can be given.
Transaction monitoring, data and effectiveness
Monitoring questions often cross several boundaries: whether scenarios reflect the risks the firm is trying to address; whether source data is complete and traceable; how alerts reach investigators; and what evidence is used to understand quality and effectiveness. A review conversation can separate a data or lineage concern from a scenario, workflow or governance concern before deciding what should be examined.
In 2017, Trevor Barritt led a NICE Actimize webinar session on transaction monitoring agility and data lineage. This work reflects his experience discussing how monitoring systems, information and processes connect.
Technology, vendors and AI
Technology advisory addresses requirements, operating-model fit, data dependencies, supplier evaluation and governance of analytical or AI-enabled processes. The assessment connects the proposed capability to its control purpose, required data, human decisions, limitations and accountability.
Training can address a defined AML, monitoring, sanctions or technology question for boards, MLROs, compliance teams or technical staff. Learning aims and format follow the audience's responsibilities and operating context.
Choose the closest problem area
If the issue is broad or still taking shape, begin with financial crime or AML consulting. Choose controls, governance or risk assessment for questions about framework design, accountability or control evidence. Focus on transaction monitoring when scenarios, data, alerts or effectiveness are central, and technology when a system, supplier or AI decision is driving the enquiry. MLRO, KYC and beneficial ownership, sanctions and training address more specific needs.
International enquiries are welcome. The relevant jurisdiction, local requirements and business context shape each matter.
Common questions
How do I choose the right service area?
Start with the decision or control problem. Choose the closest area above, or describe the issue if it crosses governance, monitoring, data or technology. The discussion will establish which expertise is relevant.
How should I prepare for an initial discussion?
Describe the decision or concern, the relevant business and jurisdictions, what has already been reviewed, the evidence or systems involved, and the decision-makers or timing constraints. Do not send sensitive customer information until a suitable process has been agreed.
Can you advise on matters outside the UK?
Yes. International enquiries are welcome. Applicable law and supervisory expectations vary, so the relevant jurisdiction and local context shape any advice.
