Transaction Monitoring Training for Analysts

Analysts need to connect each alert to its scenario, relevant case context and next decision. Learning can use case examples to practise interpretation, investigation and escalation. Audience, materials and format follow the team's needs.

Practise the analyst's decision path

A workshop can help analysts interpret why a scenario fired, identify information relevant to the alert and distinguish observed facts from assumptions or gaps. Practice follows the investigation record: what was reviewed, what remains unknown, why an outcome or escalation was selected, and how to document the rationale for another decision-maker.

Case discussion may also explore when to seek additional information, when to escalate under the organisation's procedures, and how outcomes and recurring issues can feed back to monitoring owners. The aim is to strengthen shared reasoning and decision records within agreed processes, not to prescribe conclusions for live cases or replace internal policy, supervision or accountable judgement.

Shape practice around the team's work

An initial discussion can establish analyst experience, the types of alerts or scenarios in view, relevant products and jurisdictions, existing investigation guidance, escalation routes and learning gaps. If agreed, a session can use hypothetical or suitably anonymised cases to work through scenario intent, customer and transaction context, competing explanations, investigative notes and decision points. Sensitive live records should not be shared until an appropriate process is agreed.

Learning aims might include more consistent interpretation of scenario rationale, clearer case notes, appropriate escalation or useful feedback to scenario owners. The format and any assessment method are agreed with the organisation.

A specialist complement to general AML learning

Analyst learning focuses on alerts and investigations. Board and senior-leadership learning addresses oversight, risk appetite and challenge, while broader AML training covers the organisation's framework and responsibilities. Case practice develops how analysts interpret and record information.

FCA Handbook SYSC 6.3 guidance says that, for firms within its relevant scope, financial crime systems and controls should include appropriate employee training in money laundering. A 2017 NICE Actimize webinar records Trevor Barritt as a co-lead for a transaction-monitoring discussion focused on agility. These sources inform the subject matter; the learning aims and format are set for each audience.

Common questions

Is this general AML awareness training?

It focuses on analysts' alert workflow, experience and learning needs rather than general AML awareness.

Can you use our real alert cases?

Yes, if permissions and secure handling arrangements allow. Hypothetical or suitably anonymised material can provide case context without sharing live sensitive records.

Does the workshop provide a recognised certificate?

The workshop does not confer a recognised qualification or CPD credit.
